About Us

Wairau Valley Special School is a school that caters for students with unique disabilities, all our students have an intellectual disability with some having additional physical disabilities also. We embrace a totally holistic approach to learning within a medical and therapeutically supported model.

Roll numbers have increased significantly over the past few years and we currently have over 190 students enrolled. The Board of Trustees, students and staff reflect New Zealand’s changing cultural and ethnic mix.

The philosophy of the school has always embraced ‘inclusion’. We promote the presence of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of our society. This aim remains at the core of all current practices and student programmes.
