Wairau Valley Special School provides the services of a Specialist Teacher for the Outreach Service. This means that a teacher from our school can work at a mainstream school with an ORS funded student and their class teacher once a week all year.
The specialist teacher works as part of the students' support team, which includes their class teachers, Special Education staff, support staff and family and whanau.
We provide this service as our teachers have specialist expertise to support students with high needs and can provide up to date knowledge and resources to support those students whose parents have chosen a mainstream education for their ORS funded special needs child.
The mainstream school transfers the student’s specialist teacher time over to our school in order for us to be able to provide this service and the Ministry of Education supports us with funding for administration and travel costs.
Wairau Valley Special School will draw up a contract with the mainstream school at the end of each year for the following year.
The outreach service teacher may do a range of activities, such as:
observations and assessing of a student’s learning needs
teaching students in class or in small groups
putting together programmes for a student
monitoring the student’s progress and planning their next steps
modelling different strategies for teachers and teacher’s aides
helping teachers to work with the curriculum
reworking materials so they meet a student’s needs
asking for support from the Ministry of Education
contributing to a student’s Individual Education Plan
